A Brief History of
Easingwold & District u3a

The Easingwold & District Branch of the University of the Third Age (as it was called then - now just 'u3a' in lower case) came into being in April 2002. A steering committee was set up and monthly meetings began in May 2002.

By October 2002 we welcomed our 100th member, Miss Edith Hodgson. By January 2003 there were 121 members and by March 2003 there were 16 groups.

It was agreed at the outset the steering committee would stand down in December 2002, with elections being held in January 2003 for a new Management Committee.

The retiring members of the Steering Group were:
  • Audrey Freeborn (Chair), Nancy and John Kilburn, Trevor Mann, Brenda Milburn, Ron Minty, Ann Roberts, Peter Wells, Ruth Whillock, Jenny Williamson, Sheila Wright.

The following people were elected to the new Management Committee at the first AGM on Wednesday 22nd January 2003:
  • Audrey Freeborn (Chair)
  • John Kilburn (Vice-Chair)
  • Ron Minty (Treasurer)
  • Ann Roberts (Secretary)
  • Nancy Kilburn, Brenda Milburn, Philip Sibley, Peter Wells, Martin Whillock, Ruth Whillock, Jenny Williamson, Sheila Wright.

Over the years nearly 900 people have enjoyed being a member. With current membership being just shy of 300 partaking in over 30 interest groups, ranging from those to stretch our minds to those that help with our physical health. We have new people joining regularly and we look forward to a bright future.
